Pointy Hat Cast 030 - Overlord

The Dunkirk of Zombie Movies

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: Overlord(2018) directed by Julius Avery, written by Billy Ray and Mark L. Smith, starring Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, Mathilde Ollivier, Pilou Asbæk, John Magaro, Iain De Caestecker, and many more.

Overlord is an amalgamation of many film genres. It's a little bit horror, a little bit zombie film, a little bit action, a little bit war movie, with a dose of humor. It doesn't manage to deliver on every aspect and becomes a little diluted in its attempt to be everything. Overall it's a very enjoyable and watchable film. It has Nazi zombies, what more do you want?! The correct answer would be even more zombies.

P.S. Isaiah is stuck in New Zealand for the foreseeable future without a reliable internet connection so that may affect the release schedule of future episodes. I have a few unreleased episodes in our archives so I'm working on releasing those. Thank you for your patience!

Pointy Hat Cast 029 - Knives Out

Lawyer Yoda

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: Knives Out(2019) directed by Rian Johnson, written by Rian Johnson, starring Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, and many more.

Knives Out is a fantastic "Who Dun It?" movie written and directed by Rian Johnson. The cast is stacked and they all deliver with some very charming and humorous performances. The writing is humorous and witty, and the pacing of the film is incredible. It takes you along for a ride and never lets you down.

Mail Bag: What is your favorite Who Dun It movie?

Pointy Hat Cast 028 - Shin Godzilla

The Better Godzilla Movie

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: Shin Godzilla(2016) directed by Hideaki Anno (Evangellion) and Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan), written by Hideaki Anno, starring Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi, Satomi Ishihara, Ren Osugi, Akira Emoto, and many more.

Shin Godzilla is a fantastic movie on many layers. First of all, it's a great Godzilla film. You get to see Godzilla being Godzilla, a representation of the unstoppable, destructive side of nature. It works as a criticism of the Japanese bureaucracy and the greed of governments world wide. It also showcases some of the deeper contemplative elements seen in Evangelion on the nature of humanity and the power of unity.

Mail Bag: What are your thoughts on tiny humanoid Godzillas?

Is Godzilla human? Why do donuts have holes? Find out next time, on the Pointy Hat Cast!

Pointy Hat Cast 027 - Godzilla King of the Monsters

Still Piss

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: Godzilla: King of the Monsters(2019) directed by Michael Dougherty, written by Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields, starring Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Ziyi Zhang, Bradley Whitford, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance, and many more.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters fails to capture the spirit of Godzilla by focusing too much on the human characters. This would still work out if the characters were likeable but sadly almost everyone is idiotic, hypocritical, and unrelatable. The other characters are given marginal roles with little to say and even less to do on screen. The only redeeming part of this movie is Godzilla himself because no one can hate Godzilla. He's just Godzilla, doing Godzilla things.

Mail Bag: What is your favorite Godzilla movie?

Why is Godzilla so cute? Why is Godzilla at the dentist? Find out next time, on the Pointy Hat Cast!

Pointy Hat Cast 026 - Dunkirk

Bane on a Plane

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: Dunkirk(2017) directed and written by Christopher Nolan and starring Fionn Whitehead, Damien Bonnard, Aneurin Barnard, Tom Hardy, and many more.

Dunkirk is best watched with Darkest Hour. While Darkest Hour gives us a glimpse into the political drama of the events leading up to the evacuation, Dunkirk shows us the brutal and grim reality of the sheer hopelessness and despair felt by the soldiers before the evacuation. This movie does not focus on bombastic entertainment and an unrealistic portrayal of war. Instead we see a silent and mournful film showcasing the brutality of war as well as the will of the common man to survive and help each other in desperate times.

Hot Topic: What is your Nolan movie?

Why wouldn't Bane land the plane? Why do Nazis always resort to zombies? Find out next time, on the Pointy Hat Cast!

Pointy Hat Cast 025 - Parasite

Three Lights

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: Parasite (2019) directed by Bong Joon Ho (봉준호) and starring Song Kang Ho (송강호), Lee Sun Gyun (이선균), Cho Yuh Jung (조여정), Choi Woo Shik (최우식), Park So Dam (박소담,) and many more. Now with Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Screenplay, and nominated for Best Production Design, and Best Film Editing.

Parasite is a social commentary on classism shown through two two different families, one very rich and one very poor. It's very real but also very surreal at the same time. I know people might be tired of having a "woke" mentality being pushed on them but this movie handles the subject matter in a very real and touching way where there are no real villains and life just sucks for everyone.

Hot Topic: What is your favorite Bong Joon Ho movie?

Why would someone wire three lights separately and run them into a secret basement? Can Bane fly a plane? Find out next time, on the Pointy Hat Cast!

Pointy Hat Cast - Twelve Days of Star Wars - Episode XII

The Mandalorian

Episode Notes

Today is day twelve of our twelve days of Star Wars Special. That means we are covering The Mandalorian! What a lack luster film. What a great cast of characters. They are all memorable and endearing in their own way. This show is very sincere and well crafted. It's an incredibly refreshing change of pace from the hectic, action packed, character light offerings from the new trilogy of Star Wars movies. It returns to a more slower, contemplative pace where the spotlight can really shine on the characters.

Also baby Yoda is too cute.

Thank you guys for being patient! Finally, our last episode is out! Next time we do something like this, we'll do it at least a couple of months in advance.

In the holiday spirit, thank you guys for the support and for listening all this time. From our very first crappy episode, to our latest crappy episode, stay pointy friends.

Pointy Hat Cast - Twelve Days of Star Wars - Episode XI

Star Wars IX: Rise of Skywalker

Episode Notes

Today is day eleven of our twelve days of Star Wars Special. That means we are covering Star Wars IX: Rise of Skywalker! What a lack luster film. While it does look and sound great and is jam packed with fun and exciting action sequences, it lacks completely in narrative and character development. It takes no risks. Nothing is lost and nothing is gained. Too many new characters are introduced and thrown away while the main characters we've come to love are ignored. This movie was so afraid to go forward at all that it ended up going backwards in many regards. It's still a fun film, just not a well made or meaningful one.

Thank you guys for being patient as I edit the episodes as fast as I can. I have returned to a normal schedule of content creation now that the holidays are over so I only have weekends free to edit!

Pointy Hat Cast - Twelve Days of Star Wars - Episode X

Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

Episode Notes

Today is day ten of our twelve days of Star Wars Special. That means we are covering Star Wars VII: The Last Jedi! What a controversial and divisive film. On first viewing at the theaters, I thought it was just mediocre. And then came the internet hate train and I hopped on as well. But after re-watching the movie through a more critical lens, it actually has some redeeming qualities. I'd go as far as to say that personally speaking this is my favorite movie in the new trilogy.

Pointy Hat Cast - Twelve Days of Star Wars - Episode IX

Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens

Episode Notes

Today is day nine of our twelve days of Star Wars special. Today we're going over Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens. While it is an entertaining roller coaster ride of a movie with thrills and action, it lacks a lot of character development and relies on characters looking at the screen or another character and telling us what is happening and how people are feeling and how we should feel about it instead of showing it. I love the idea of this movie and the idea of the characters, but the actual movie and the characters presented lack luster to me.
