Pointy Hat Cast 022 - The Fifth Element

Is Love

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: The Fifth Element - The Fifth Element (1997) starring Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and Gary Oldman is a wonderfully weird space opera of epic proportions. It still holds up visually as most of the effects are practical and the attention to detail is stunning. It masterfully weaves together and pulls apart different character arcs as well as contains witty satire and humor in almost every scene. The element may be fifth but the movie is first in our hearts. Pointy Hat Cast approved!

Pointy Hat Cast 021 - Lost in Translation

Borrow Bill

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: Lost in Translation - Lost in Translation (2003) starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson captures the feeling of melancholy and loneliness like no other. It feels like real people, with real dialogue, in real situations. For relaxing times, make it Suntory time.

Pointy Hat Cast 020 - Gladiator

Bread Thrower

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: Gladiator - Gladiator (2000) starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix is a very memorable film and has a special place in our hearts. Upon re watching it though, we quickly realized that it is indeed a very flawed movie. The flaws do not detract from the movie though and only adds to its charm. It also creates some unintentionally humorous moments!

Hot Topic: Does Gladiator still hold up for you guys? Send us an email!

Pointy Hat Cast 019 - Her

Zero D True Love

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: Her - Her (2013) starring Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson, and Amy Adams is an interesting take on the future of society and artificial intelligence. It explores the nature and meaning of love in a relatable way while managing to inject humor into some situations. Joaquin's performance is quite excellent and he manages to portray a character that is both relatable and not relatable; very human yet also lacking in many way. Scarlett Johansson's performance is excellent as well. Also...0D over 2D!

Pointy Hat Cast 018 - Black Dynamite

High Orphans

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: Black Dynamite - Black Dynamite (2009) is the perfect example of a movie that is made intentionally bad but is so good. There is probably no other movie that comes close to this level. A loving parody of blaxploitation films of old, it introduces a whole lot of witty humor and masterful satire. Each scene is packed full of small humorous details. Michael Jai White has an explosive performance as Black Dynamite as he takes on problems from the Man trying to keep everyone down, orphans on drugs, and even kung fu treachery. Join us as we take a romp through this hilarious film!

Pointy Hat Cast 017 - The Cabin in the Woods

Monitor Intern

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: The Cabin in the Woods - The Cabin in the Woods (2011) is a surprising twist on the horror movie genre. It's a parody, satire, and meta commentary on the movie industry as a whole. It's sharp and smart but probably won't be enjoyable for every movie goer. It also contains one of the most memorable elevator scenes of all time and features more monsters than you can fling a chained bear trap at (including the much feared Kevin).

Pointy Hat Cast 016.5 - Galaxy Quest

Tropic Thunder in Space

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: Galaxy Quest - Galaxy Quest (1999) is a fantastic movie. It is incredibly well written, well shot, and has amazing performances from the cast (Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Rockwell, many more). It goes beyond just being a simple parody and satire of Star Trek and becomes a very endearing and delightful masterpiece of cinema.

Pointy Hat Cast 016 - Star Trek Beyond

Tom Cruisin Space Families

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: Star Trek Beyond - A movie with a lovely cast with lovely performances falls short due to poor logic in the narrative. The editing creates unnecessary tension and cuts away to a new scene multiple times. While flawed, there's still plenty to enjoy here.

Pointy Hat Cast 015.5 - Hot Rod

Eagle Powers

Episode Notes

Hosts: Barry, Isaiah, Sam

Topic: Hot Rod - We dive into this hilarious, Nacho Libre-esqe movie. This is a tale of a young stuntman (Andy Samberg) raising money to help his step father get better so he could beat the crap out of him. Talk about father issues. Explosive content is involved. The seemingly random and offbeat humor may be hit or miss depending on your taste.

Genghis Thanos Khan

Episode Notes

Topic: Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey - We talk about this heart warming, surprisingly positive, and fun romp through time and it's more hilarious but less structured sequel.
